The Resume Checklist: Get Shortlisted, Not Skipped

Most resumes are not rejected because the candidate lacks skills. They are rejected because the document fails to communicate value fast enough. Here is the checklist to run before every single application.

A resume being reviewed with the weak bullet points marked and rewritten as measurable achievements

1. The one job your resume has

A recruiter spends seconds on your resume, not minutes. Every line either builds your case for an interview or wastes the space that could have.

Three things worth internalising before you edit a single word:

The point

You are not writing an autobiography. You are writing an argument, and the reader is skimming it while three other tabs are open.

2. Contact information

The least glamorous section, and the one that silently disqualifies people. Check every box before moving on.

3. Your resume summary

Replace generic statements like "hardworking and passionate" with measurable positioning. Nobody has ever been interviewed for being hardworking, because everybody claims it.

The formula: role + years + top 3 skills + what you deliver.

4. Work experience

Every bullet should answer three questions: what did you do, how did it help, and what was the measurable impact. If a bullet only answers the first, it is describing a job description rather than your performance in it.

Weak

Created dashboards

Strong

Built Power BI dashboards that reduced reporting time by 40%

No metrics available? Estimate honestly and say so in your head, not on the page. "Reduced a weekly 3 hour manual process to roughly 20 minutes" is a real number you almost certainly know. Never invent a figure you could not defend in an interview.

5. Projects

A project without context is just a link. Recruiters do not click links to figure out what you did. For each project, include:

Recruiters hire problem solvers, not tool users. Lead with the problem, not the tech stack.

6. ATS optimization

If the applicant tracking system cannot read your resume, no human ever will. This is where beautiful designer templates go to die: the two column layout that looks great in Canva often parses as scrambled nonsense.

7. The 10 mistakes that quietly kill your chances

None of these produce an error message. They just reduce your odds, silently, every time you apply.

  1. A generic objective statement
  2. No quantified achievements
  3. Weak project descriptions
  4. Missing LinkedIn
  5. The same resume sent to every job
  6. Poor formatting
  7. No ATS keywords
  8. Grammar mistakes
  9. Listing tools without context
  10. No business impact anywhere on the page

8. The final pass before you hit apply

Four questions. Answer them honestly, because the recruiter will.

If the answer to the first one is anything other than a clear yes, the problem is not the job market. Go back to section 4.
